  POIESIS
  Philosophy Online Serials

Visit the new version of POIESIS, completely redesigned, with more content, and additional functionality!

POIESIS is a subscription based reference and publishing service offering searchable access to the full text of hundreds of current, recent, and back issues of a growing number of philosophy journals and series. Every word in every available issue is fully searchable, including thousands of articles, book reviews, and dissertation listings, as well as all abstracts, footnotes, and bibliographic listings. Uniquely structured around dozens of philosophy titles, POIESIS includes journals and series published by philosophical societies, departments, university presses, and commercial publishers in several countries. While annual subscriptions to POIESIS are only available to institutions, the tables of contents of all issues in the database are freely available to all visitors who register here

POIESIS now contains over 2,400 issues and 350,000 pages of text from 55 journals and series, and most of these are not available in electronic format from any other service. Put another way, the project currently contains the complete content of approximately 36,000 articles and reviews. POIESIS will ultimately contain the fulltext of 100 journals and series, and more than 70 journals have already been licensed for the project.

A POIESIS subscription allows users to search the entire database for any word or combination of words, and to view up to a paragraph of text around each "hit." Search results are presented on a results map, allowing users to see the article title, the journal name and issue, and all of the "hits" with a limited display of text. Abstracts, if available, are also viewable. This functionality is provided for all issues of all journals in the database. In addition, most journal publishers permit full text display of their journals. If the subscribing institution has a print or electronic subscription to such a journal, POIESIS allows users to click on the paragraph display and jump to the full text display of that journal at no extra charge. Users can also browse or search the available issues from these titles.

All issues of 20 journals or series are now available in POIESIS, and all back issues of Faith and Philosophy, International Journal of Applied Philosophy, Philosophy and History, Philosophy Research ArchivesSocial Philosophy Today, and Social Theory and Practice are in production. In addition, many back issues of The Monist, Philosophical Studies, and the Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association will be added this year. In the future, we plan to convert all issues of Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal and Southern Journal of Philosophy, and more conversion projects will be announced later this year. The back issues of Business Ethics Quarterly, Philosophy & Theology, Teaching Philosophy, and The Review of Metaphysics are available on CD-ROM with private-use and public-use licenses.
